Chiapas, Bus To Beaches and Ruins, Tonala, Tapachula

Chiapas, Bus To Tonala, Tapachula

Chiapas State Mexico

Bus service from Huatulco goes north, south, and inland to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas State.

An option therefore is to continue south from Huatulco to Tonala, Chiapas, and go to the beach at Puerto Arista  Playa Arista, where camping, ATV tours, lagoon tours, and surfing on 32 miles of beach open to the ocean  is available.
From Tonala, reach Tapachula, Chiapas and the beaches of Puerto Chiapas and the ruin site of Izapa.

Tapachula provides a gateway to Guatemala or inland to San Cristobal de las Casas. The first class bus station is served by ADO with OCC buses. Tica Bus also uses the same terminal to run cross border buses to Panama City, Panama.

From Tapachula reach San Cristobal de as Casas and from there reach Ocosingo and the Mayan Ruin of Tonina. From Ocosingo continue to the ruin of Palenque by first class ADO bus. (OCC bus)

From Palenque you can also reach the ruin famous for wall murals, Bonampak and the ruin of Yaxchilan on the Usumacinta River.  Also reach Tikal in Guatemala through Palenque.  Cross the river at Corozal and find van transportation to Flores Guatemala for the ruin of  Tikal

Zipolite

Huatulco can also be a transportation point for trips north to the beaches of Oaxaca: Puerto Angel, Zipolite, Mazunte, and Puerto Escondido.

These beaches provide budget lodging, camping, surfing, and ecotours. From the Huatulco first class station, OCC buses go northwest along the coast road to Pochutla and then to Puerto Escondido. Sur buses also make the trip for 28 pesos Find Sur Bus at the ADO station.

From Pochutla take a cab or a collective cab called a camionetta to Puerto Angel, Zipolite, or Mazunte.(Sea Turtles)
Ask at the bus station where to catch the Combi or Camionetta; it stops across the street from the terminal about a block west. Collective cabs can only pick up at the church and at the crossroads of Route 200.  From the bus station walk three blocks to the church.
Mazunte is the least developed of the three beaches near Pochutla but all three are remote and quiet beach villages. Puerto Angel is a fishing village with fewer lodging options while Zipolite and Mazunte offer camping options and budget lodging.

Mazunte’s turtle rescue project is an interesting visit where an aquarium setting displays sea turtles that live along Mexico’s coast.

Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is forty miles northwest of Mazunte and can be reached by 20 pesos public bus, Estrella Blanca buses ,or OCC Bus from Pochutla.
Puerto Escondido  is famous in surfing circles for its tube waves on Zicatela Beach, a southwest facing beach noted for large waves. International competitions are held here in August and November.

Puerto Escondido is also noted for ecotours and lagoon tours. Agencies in the former fishing village offer all-day tours to the Chacahua Lagoon to boat through the lagoon while observing birds, crocodiles and iguanas. Closer to town, the Manialtepec Lagoon offers tours by boat to observe the birds and animals in the wild.

Other tours offered are coffee plantations, waterfalls, horseback riding, and the Mazunte turtle rescue project.

Camping Near the Beach

Las Pamas de Cortez Campground  offers sites with beach view for 45 pesos per person per night.

Dining in Puerto Escondido can be right on the beach at sunset with a plate of fresh grilled fish. Tortuga Loca Resturant has a nice setting where they serve Filete al la Plancha con Ajo for 70 pesos. In the area of Playa Principal the Vivaldi Restaurant offers free WiFi and good omelets and coffee in an outdoor setting on the main street.

On Zicatela Beach the Cafecita Resurant offers a good breakfast and free WiFi.

From Puerto Escondido, Estrella Blanca bus service reaches Acapulco.
